Going Shampoo Free

It sounds insane but I'm just crazy enough to try it. I've been reading a few blogs lately (SimpleMom and NeverHomeMaker) about shampoo and since I dyed my hair a few months ago I've been having an enormously dry scalp.

All of the stuff that people are saying about shampoo makes me wonder if it's making my hair worse:

1. It's a detergent meaning it's not exactly good for you. It's full of chemicals and toxins.

2. It strips your hair of natural oils and nutrients.

3. They didn't use shampoos until the early 20th century... before that everyone used soap.

So what do you use instead of shampoo? Baking soda and apple cider vinegar.

It's cost effective and natural. It cleans your hair without wiping out the things your hair needs to make it healthy.

So I've decided to start going shampoo free starting Dec. 16th
Woah... I know

Ingredients

Shampoo:
1 tbsp Baking Soda
1 cup Water

Conditioner:
1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
1 cup Water

**Note you have to convert this to your hair. It's a trial and error thing. If you have curly or thicker hair you might need a little more of the soda and vinegar but remember a little does a lot

Method

To Wash:

  1. Combine the cup of water and the baking soda. Some put this in a reusable water bottle and shake it up and others put it in a bowl or mason jar and stir.
  2. It will form a paste that you will then massage into your wet hair.
  3. Wait 2 mins and then rinse out just like you would shampoo.
To Condition:

  1. Use the same cup or bottle and combine water and apple cider vinegar
  2. Pour onto the ends of your hair only--Not your scalp! Unless you want super oily hair.
  3. Let it sit for 30 seconds (at most) and then give your hair a good shake-- evenly distribute the vinegar/water combo throughout your hair-- but again make sure you don't distribute onto your scalp!

Apparently the experts say that for the first few weeks you might see/feel that your hair is a little oily. Keep using the soda and the vinegar.. your hair is so used to being completely stripped that it takes a few weeks to stop producing as much oil as before.

Let me know if you try this! I'll be posting my process as I go along.
